ABCs of the Word – V

Pam at Grey Like Snuffie hosts ABC’s of the Word to focus on a scripture in which the week’s letter is highlighted.

This week’s theme letter is V

"Be sober, be vigilant;
because your adversary the devil
walks about like a roaring lion,
seeking whom he may devour."

1 Peter 5:8 NKJV

The Contemporary English Version puts it this way:

"Be on your guard and stay awake.
Your enemy, the devil, is like a roaring lion,
sneaking around to find someone to attack."

We have to be always on the lookout for situations which might trip us up on our Christian walk. We must focus on God's promises to guide and protect us.

ABCs of the Word – U

Immediately the father of the child cried out
and said with tears,
"Lord, I believe;
help my unbelief!"
Mark 9:24 NKJV

This father’s cry is fascinating – while he asserts his belief that Jesus can heal his son, he begs for help with any unbelief which might keep him from receiving the blessing he needed.

So many times we have a belief in Jesus Christ which allows us to be called ‘Christian’; but only the Holy Spirit can give us the belief which will produce true Christian perspectives and behavior.

Here is a song which expresses a prayer for true belief.

I Believe, Help Thou My Unbelief

Written By Bill & Gloria Gaither

I believe help thou my unbelief
I'd take the finite risk of trusting like a child
I believe help thou my unbelief
I walk into the unknown trusting all the while

I long so much to feel the warmth that others seem to know
but should I never feel a thing I claim him even so

I believe, help thou my unbelief.
I walk into the unknown trusting all the while
I walk into the unknown trusting....

Here is a recording of the song on YouTube:

And this is the testimony:
God has given us eternal life,
and this life is in his Son.
He who has the Son has life;
he who does not have the Son of God
does not have life.
1 John 5:11-12 NIV

The Word we have is certain – in Christ we have eternal life as a freewill gift of God the Father.

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts,
since as members of one body you were called to peace.
And be thankful.
Colossians 3:15 NIV

This makes me think that as followers of Christ we yield all that disturbs us to His care. In this way the emotion that rules our heart and mind will be one of peace, even when we daily face various troubles. Thank you Lord for this wonderful promise. May it take root in our lives. Amen.

Do not be anxious about anything,
but in everything, by prayer and petition,
with thanksgiving, present your requests to God..
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding,
will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6,7 NIV

What a tremendous promise...this is what I hope we can each experience in these times.

Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God
with all your heart and with all your soul
and with all your mind.'
This is the first and greatest commandment.
And the second is like it:
'Love your neighbor as yourself.'
All the Law and the Prophets hang
on these two commandments."

Matthew 22:37-40 NIV

This implies that as members of Christ’s kingdom of heaven, we His followers, live by the principle of the kingdom which is Love.

"I have loved you with an everlasting love."
Jeremiah 31:3 NIV

Our personal God is characterized by love for each person here on earth.

How great is the love the Father has lavished on us,
that we should be called children of God!
And that is what we are!
The reason the world does not know us
is that it did not know him.

1 John 3:1

When Moses asked to see God, what was revealed to him were the attributes of the loving Creator:

"Then the LORD came down in the cloud and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the LORD. And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming,
‘The LORD, the LORD,
the compassionate and gracious God,
slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness,
maintaining love to thousands,
and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin.’"

Exodus 34:5-7 NIV

Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:

Who, being in very nature God,

did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,

but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant,

being made in human likeness.

And being found in appearance as a man,

he humbled himself and became obedient to death—

even death on a cross!

"Then Jesus said to the twelve, "Do you also want to go away?"
But Simon Peter answered Him,
"Lord, to whom shall we go?
You have the words of eternal life."

John 6:67-68 NKJV

Peter realized very well that they were already where they needed to be. There could be no point in leaving Jesus side to go elsewhere. For what?

Later, before He returned to heaven, Jesus then gave them directions:

"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father
and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
and teaching them to obey everything
I have commanded you.
And surely I am with you always,
to the very end of the age."

Matthew 28:19-20 NIV

Using the rich reserves of grace He has given us, we are to go and tell others of the good news of His love and of His soon return.

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said,
"I am the light of the world.
Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness,
but will have the light of life."

John 8:12 NIV

This wonderful promise assures us that as we follow our Lord our way will be luminous with his grace and protection. The phrase "will never walk in darkness" indicates that whatever difficulties we may face, God will see us through.
As I am slowly recovering from a bout of sickness after this year of being a full-time and sole caregiver to an elderly parent, I can have hope that my needs will be met.
Many thanks to all who have inquired after my health. Your prayers are most appreciated.

However, as it is written:

"No eye has seen, no ear has heard,

no mind has conceived

what God has prepared

for those who love him"

1 Corinthians 2:9 NIV

Just as we cannot imagine all the wonderful things the Lord has awaiting us in the heavenly kingdom, so we do not grasp all that is available by grace for our daily life. Only by trusting in His love can we enjoy His kingdom now, as we claim Jesus’ declaration, "The kingdom of heaven is within you." Luke 17:21

"Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you
the desires of your heart."

Psalms 37:4 NIV

Another text with a similar message from Jesus' sermon on the mount is:

"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness,
and all these things will be given to you as well."
Matthew 6:33 NIV

Here is the full context of Jesus’s statement:

If that is how God clothes the grass of the field,
which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire,
will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?'
or 'What shall we wear?'
For the pagans run after all these things,
and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness,
and all these things will be given to you as well.
Matthew 6:30-33

As we seek the things of our God, as we choose to delight in Him, all our needs will be supplied.

"Abstain from all appearance of evil."

This is a text my mother has often quoted, explaining that, as Christians, we should do all we can to avoid situations or inferences that might even give a false testimony.

But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord,
"Look, Lord! Here and now I give half
of my possessions to the poor,
and if I have cheated anybody out of anything,
I will pay back four times the amount."
Luke 19:18 NIV

Jesus offered to come for a visit to Zacchaeus’ home and right away Zacchaeus responds with a change of heart and life. Just the realization that he was important to Jesus, made Zacchaeus reject his former way of life, and the values he had held, and turn to definitive principles which Jesus taught.

"Simply let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,'
and your 'No,' "no";
anything beyond this
comes from the evil one."
Matt 5:37 NIV

In His teaching called the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus covered many topics, giving His listeners principles of truth and simplicity. Regarding taking oaths, He advised them to simply speak the truth in a direct manner. Here is the full context:

"Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago,
'Do not break your oath,
but keep the oaths you have made to the Lord.'
But I tell you, Do not swear at all:
either by heaven, for it is God's throne;
or by the earth, for it is his footstool;
or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King.
And do not swear by your head,
for you cannot make even one hair white or black.
Simply let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No';
anything beyond this comes from the evil one.
Matt 5:33-37 NIV

Jesus’ words imply our communication should be direct and never complicated by double meanings or innuendo. From a pure heart, the words must proceed in clear-cut dialogue.
